If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter you know I’ve become pretty obsessed with the Orangetheory workout. I started Orangetheory a few months ago as cross training and it’s quickly become my go-to workout. Orangetheory is an hour long HIIT small-group class – for about 1/2 of the class you’re on a treadmill doing different incline and sprint workouts, and 1/2 the class is strength training. The entire time a trainer is guiding you through the workout and telling you what to do. During the workouts you wear a Polar heart rate monitor and the goal of the class is to reach your “Orange zone” for a certain amount of time, 84%-90% of your maximum heart rate zone – this is all based on your gender, age and weight.
I really love this workout/class because it really pushes me. By being able to constantly see how hard I’m working, and with a trainer motivating me, I’ve been pushing my limits and seeing the benefits in my running. When I’m training alone I haven’t been so good at getting in hills and speedwork – Orangetheory has forced me to start doing this training. Since starting Orangetheory I’ve improved my race times and my treadmill speeds – I started at a 6.5mph as a comfortable, steady base pace and am now up to 8mph. Awesome!
This past month the trainers had us doing a challenge called Marathon Month. The challenge was to run at least 26.2 miles during class – this can get tricky since you’re only doing 23-25ish minutes on the treadmill, with some of it being hills. If you did 26.2 miles during the month you got a special Orangetheory shirt and if you logged the most miles you won a brand new pair of running shoes.
While I didn’t end up winning the overall challenge (I logged 53 miles while the top runner was in the high 70s), I really liked participating in this because it pushed me to increase my speeds to get to a higher miles (ummm hello 12mph sprint! Never thought I’d ever see that on a treadmill). This challenge really taught me that I’m capable of pushing myself a little more during my workouts. As I get into the middle of my race season I’m excited to keep seeing my 5K times improve and am getting closer to reaching my sub-20 minute goal by the end of the summer.
Congratulations to Christina D. for winning the Pure Via Summer Fit Kit! I’ll be in touch shortly!
