This Sunday I’m going to be hosting my first Twitter chat with Matt from Dad runsDisney (have you RSVP’d yet?!) and have had a few of my readers ask what a Twitter chat is and how to participate. First time doing a Twitter chat? No problem! Here’s my guide on how to participate:
How do you chat on Twitter?!
Twitter chats can come in all shapes and sizes – there isn’t really just one way to do them. For the #runDisneyChat we’ll use this format:
Matt and myself will alternate tweeting the chat questions from our Twitter accounts throughout the hour – like this:
The questions will be tweeted out in the same format each time : Question number – Question – Hashtag.
After the question is tweeted out, answer the question with a similar format:
The questions will be sent out with plenty of time in between so you can chat with other people and read other people’s responses. Don’t worry if you miss a question or two – you can answer as many or as little as you want! Just make sure to answer questions within the hour so your tweets are entered to win the giveaway at the end of the chat
How do you keep up with the chat?
Twitter has an option to follow a hashtags right on their site in their search bar
..but sometimes this can be a little delayed. Thankfully, you have a few other options including my personal fave: Twubs. Twubs is completely free and makes following Twitter chats a breeze. Just log in with your Twitter account, type in the chat hashtag and instantly a dashboard will come up to follow the chat:
Twubs allows you to adjust the speed of the chat to however fast or slow you want the chat to be (need a bathroom break? no problem -Twubs’ got ya covered with a pause option). Twubs also adds the hashtag automatically the the end of your tweets too!
Other Tips/Best Practices
Remember the hashtag in responses
Using the hashtag is super important during chats – this is how your response is added to the conversation (and how you get entered to win the giveaway) and how people can chat with you.
RT the questions from the hosts
Twitter chats can get chatty! Help get the next question out by re-tweeting the questions when they’re sent out from the hosts. This isn’t a requirement, but your fellow chatters will thank you for it!
Chat with others
Twitter chats are social! Connect and chat with other participants as you answer the questions – you never know what you might learn.
