Socially Training

Last night I was able to meet up with some friends at my gym’s run club. Back in the summer, this was a weekly occurrence - however as Goofy training picked up, I had to move to running solo to keep up with my training schedule.

It was a bit snowy, so we held run club on a few rows of treadmills. My gym sets up run club in 3 groups: a 2 mile run/walk group, a 3 mile running group, and a 6 mile running group. Last night we did something similar, except it was more speed oriented: you picked your distance out of the 3, then you were to run hard/sprint 1 minute, then jog/walk 2 minutes.

I wish I had know about the speed workout, as I wouldn’t have scarfed down a bag of Pirate’s Booty right before run club (in my defense, I was pretty hungry..and pirate’s booty is delicious).

My stomach was full of pirate’s booty regret by mile 2, so I dropped down from the 6 mile group to the 3 mile.

It’ll be nice when it starts warming up (and its light out) to return to the streets with them on Tuesdays. I’m just not sure how I’ll be able to blend my training plan and run with my group. My training plan calls for a variety of runs on Tuesdays – ranging from slow runs to speed workouts of various distances. With run club, we always keep to those 3 group at a casual speed.

QOTD: How do you continue to run with friends and train for your races?

  1. IM not a runner— but I AM a mom to a child who would live on the BOOTY if I let her :)

  2. I feel your struggle, I have a lot I balance in my weekly training schedule. I coach a 10:00 minute/mike pace group twice a week at my local running store, pace te girlfriend training for her first half at a 11:30/mile pace once or twice a week, an my own speed work training, intervals, recovery jogs, and tempo runs ranging from 6:45-9:30/mile. As of now it just takes proper planning & running twice on Saturdays. As Cleveland marathon gets closer I’m not sure how I’ll balance my pace group & pushing for 3:30 in Ohio.

  3. Oh yeah the it’s hard to stop the Booty! I do my serious training on my own and will do occasional ‘fun runs’ with friends.

  4. I have learned that I have to run alone sometimes. I like company for some running. Running with others is great at the track and part of my long run. Three other days I run alone, to build confidence in my ability and to do my thing.

  5. I’ve never joined a running club…I usually prefer to run alone. But when I have run with friends, it’s because we’ve been training for the same races–which is nice because we’re typically doing about the same distances at the same times.

  6. I honestly can’t remember the last time I ran without a buddy – maybe that’s bad to not know how to run solo? All my races I’ve run have been with at least one friend (and we’ve stuck together through the race). I’ve never done a “run club” for a treadmill run, though, and I’m intrigued. Maybe it’s a way to reduce the “dreadmill” boredom that I have every time I step onto the hamster wheel ;)

  7. I kinda just moved, so all my running partners live so far away from me now (or I’m the one who lives far away) so I just have to keep up the pace myself :/ plus, I have a really hard time running in the snow here in Sweden ! Cant wait til spring and summer arrives ! :)
