Today I’d like to introduce you to my friend David Graves from The Will to Prepare

david-graves

Why did you start running?: I started in 2008 because I wanted to see what I could accomplish.  I set a goal for the following year of completing 3 half marathons and 500 miles.  I ran my first half marathon only 4 months after my first one mile run.  I completed both goals.
What was your biggest running accomplishment in 2012?: Biggest accomplishment was setting Personal Best in all 3 Half Marathons this year.  Each time faster than before.  Ultimately I shaved 30 minutes off my Half Marathon time.  Also named Nike Runner of the week in October, never dreamed that would happen.
What are your running goals for 2013?: Goals for 2013 – 1,000 miles again, 4 Half Marathons, and my first full The Marine Corps Marathon in October
How do you keep yourself motivated?: I stay motivated by having clearly defined goals and training plan.  I am a member of Further Faster Forever, a group of over 1,000 athletes from all over the world who motivate and inspire each other to keep going.  I find great motivation in helping others achieve their goals as a mental coach.  I help them to refine or more deeply focus on specific areas of their training that may need attention to reach the desired goal.  My main mantra “the will to prepare” is all about developing the mental toughness to pay the price each and every day with short term goals so that I can achieve my long term goals.  One of my mentors said it best, “A long term goal without a daily plan is just an idea.”
