Commitment Day 5K was a race I had signed up for on a whim. A few of my friends from my run club were running it, so I figured it’d be a fun way to start the new year.
And then I woke up to this:

-10 degrees with a forecast of 0 for the day. Seriously?!
This was a really hard decision for me. Part of me thought, ‘Well I signed up for this, I have to run it’ while the other part thought, ‘You’re running in Dopey in 9 days. You can’t afford to get sick for a fun race before the big race.’
I eventually decided that I shouldn’t run it; it just wasn’t worth the risk being so close to Dopey Challenge. I was frustrated, mad, and embarrassed; this was the first race I ever signed up and didn’t show up for.
Instead of sitting around upset with myself, I took to the treadmill and ran a 5K. It wasn’t a pretty 5K, but I finished it (I blame the steak and wine last night…totally worth it).

QOTD: Have you ever had to miss a race?

If you saw my badass vs. dumbass post last week, you know I think you made the right decision! It’s not always about being hardcore. You have to be smart too!

Treadmill was a great alternative! You do not want to be sick for Dopey. I am fighting a cold and will be going Goofy….lots of rest and fluids!

I hate running in the cold! I don’t blame you! That is even way colder than it is in PA!

I think you made the right choice! You’ve been working so hard for Dopey…you definitely don’t want to ruin any chances of that one. I couldn’t even imagine temps like that since I live on the Gulf Coast! That’s crazy cold!

I think it was a very smart decision! I ran yesterday at 11:13 for the Polar Dash and it was cold! I knew what I was getting into, I trained for it and if I had a big race coming up I would have done the same thing. Plus you didn’t just give it up you hopped on the treadmill!

I think you made the right decision. Sometimes it just isn’t safe to run outside, especially if you are gearing up for a race. You still did your 5K, and that’s it what counts.

Holy BRRRR, Batman! A thousand props to you for keeping it moving.
The only race I’ve missed is because of some knee issues. I knew I shouldn’t race so I kind of forced myself to sleep through it.

I’ve DNSed (did not start) a few races over the years. Most of the time it was due to weather conditions, but there were two races I bailed on because I didn’t feel prepared. Both were half marathons and while I could have forced myself to finish, I was risking injury and general misery in the process. Initially I was embarrassed, but I eventually realized that bailing on those races was the right decision.

No worries at all! You did what your gut was telling you. I seriously doubt I would have showed up with that forecast! And you still got your miles in. Way to go!

I have not had to miss a race yet… but I would in your situation! That is just too cold! I ran in 20 degree weather today and my knees and ears were killing me
